Forty miles south of Naples, Florida sits a small, undeveloped village named Everglades City. I’m told multiple different developers have come in with plans and vision and all have been turned back.
The outside world that rolls in for Air Boat Tours of the 10,000 Island Nature Preserve, buys a T-Shirt and few alligator souvenirs and lunch and then leaves is all the outside exposure they want. This is a village steeped 5 generations and more deep in the hunting and fishing industry and change is not viewed as a friend.
Somehow the Heinz family was granted permission to build a small 5-star RV Resort on the Barron River as you come into town. That’s where Sandy and I have been hanging out the past 10 days.
Yesterday Mark and Lonny waved me over as I was walking to the clubhouse. A group of guys I had never met before were having an impromptu men’s huddle sitting in a circle on nice lounge chairs talking about life, love, victories, battle wounds and war.
One thing became evident as the palm trees swayed, fishing boats passed and the conversation unfolded: we all have a need. Jokes were told, witticisms abounded and guys shared stories of past life, business ventures, sons taking over, grandchildren and where the road is taking them next.
To a man, everyone could explain what they had retired from; in this circle there was an inability to define what they retired to. Clearly everyone wanted something in what they referred to as the 2nd half of life… but they were having a hard time pinpointing IT.
No matter a man’s age, we have a need in us… What is IT? How do we meet IT? What is IT that we really want?
Follow me for a minute…
As a man answers what he wants, he needs to first identify and understand what or who is the Source that provides what he wants.
Don’t skip past this. This is foundational. This clarifies a lot of things.
Paul makes it clear in his first letter to the Corinthians: For from Him and through Him and for Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen.
If we miss this truth I’m telling you that as men we will get stuck looking to and comparing all kinds of resources and hoping things can fill the base-line need in us.
So, what is IT that you want?
Jesus came along in Luke 6:38 and said; “Give and IT will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure, pressed down, shaken and running over…
He’s not talking about money and things here… Check the context.
Jesus is presenting a strategic life principle that is astronomical in its implications. The problem is few men grasp it. Ten business-savvy men vacationing in Florida, discussing life, searching for happiness and trying to define fulfillment …and there was barely a hint of it.
The world’s economy evolves around money and resources. God’s economy evolves around love and growing relationships with each other and with Him as our Source.
How do we miss this? Why…even amongst men who seek to follow Christ… do so many of our prayers and so much of our activity involve seeking resources that if obtained would likely replace our reliance on God as our from Him, through Him, for Him Source?
Getting back to Jesus’s bold statement in Luke 6… What is the IT? …and who are the THEY He is referring to?
Join us at the tables this Friday, as we picture IT and then spur each other to give IT a chance because IT clarifies what we want and what we need and helps frame our Eternal Investments.
Hope to see you early!
This Week’s Key Verses
Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure– pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return. Luke 6:38
For from Him and through Him and for Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen. Romans 11:36
Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:37-39
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
Yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live. I Corinthians 8:6
